Description

I suck at titles.

Anyway...

In case you didn't know, Deviant Art is hosting a Kubo and the Two Strings contest and, since Kubo was on my endless list of things I wanted to draw fan art for anyway, I figured I'd try my hand at it.  Thus, my entry. :)

The theme for the contest was overcoming obstacles and seeing as most people wrote a little blurb about it, I figured I should too.  However, my explanation will probably hit on some events in the movie so if you haven't seen it yet I'd suggest not reading below this point.

WARNING: SPOILERS

If you've seen the movie, you know that one of the most prevalent themes in it is death and, ultimately, accepting it.  By the end, his grandfather offers him immortality but because of everything Kubo has gone through he's able to see how hollow his grandfather's immortality is and how precious his life and his memories are.  He's able to use this realization to accept everything that's happend to him and reach out to his grandfather-- overcoming the last obstacle in the film's story.

In my picture, I was trying to depict a determined Kubo moving forward with the help of the memory of all of the people he's met (his allies) and experience he's accumulated through the challenges he's already overcome (the scenery stuff in on the sheets of paper).

(I hope this shortened version makes sense.  I was seriously ready to write an essay, but... Who would read that? :P)
